When “X” Stands for Fitness, Friends and Agility…
In a recent collaboration between Microsoft, New York City’s Department for the Aging and NYC Department of Technology and Telecommunications, senior centers in Flushing and Manhattan competed in a groundbreaking Xbox virtual bowling tournament.

“We are all winners here,” quipped one player who’s 88 and a great grandmother who often walks with the aid of a cane. “Yeah,”
The teams connected online and practiced each week, watching as avatars on gigantic screens mirrored the players’ real movements. Banter back and forth got team members and spectators excited about each player’s improvements. They became local celebs as newspapers, TV and blogs followed the challengers.
“We’re in it to win it,” added SAGE’s Charles (The Dominator) Cole, 63, of Chelsea. “But win, lose or draw…this is great fun!”
Selfhelp and SAGE will be using Xbox bowling and other games to keep fit and agile during the long cold winter.
