Waukesha County Announces 12th Annual Kids’ Choice

WAUKESHA, Wis. - Jan. 6, 2014 - PRLog -- Voting for the 12^th Annual Waukesha County Kids’ Choice Award is underway at participating public and school libraries in Waukesha County. The winner will be announced on Tuesday, February 11 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Mary’s Visitation Parish in Elm Grove.

Children in 4^th, 5^th and 6^th grade nominate their favorite books to be included on a reading list of fifteen outstanding titles. Children who read five of the titles receive a voucher to a Milwaukee Wave game and may vote to select the Kids’ Choice Award winners. Copies of the books are available for check out at the local and school libraries.

The Kids’ Choice Award, a program of the Waukesha County Federated Library System, encourages children in grades 4 through 6 to read for leisure. The amount of time the American public spends reading has been declining over the past decade, and it is impacting the academic success of children in the middle grades. It has also been found that students’ academic levels actually drop if children do not read in their free time (Smith).

The Milwaukee Wave professional indoor soccer team is again sponsoring the program by offering vouchers to Milwaukee Wave games as reading incentives and participating in the annual award ceremony.
