Follow on Google News | British cyclists to help save the economyBy: Proviz With the increase of 1.3 million new cyclists, the need to create a number of bike-friendly communities is growing by the minute. This just goes to show that spending money on bike infrastructure can create a number of positive economic impacts, including employment in the UK. Through recent research conducted by Dr Alexander Grous, of LSE, it's estimated 23,000 people have been employed directly into the cycling economy, generating over £500m in wages and £100m in taxes. The bike industry took a hit when the recession emerged, however, due to those who have chosen to exchange cars for a more cost-effective form of transport, bike sales are again hitting a new high. Grous’ study supports this, stating that 3.7 million bikes were sold this year, of which £51m were British built. Increasing sales of bikes have led to the growth of many British companies, such as Proviz; who thanks to a growing number of British cyclists, have tripled in sales in the last year. Figures taken from August 2013 show that the bicycle industry contributes £2.9bn towards the national economy and Proviz leads the way with their innovative cycling products.
