Official ‘four minute’ tabata™ workout DVD launches in the UK
Imagine getting fit in just four minutes! It sounds like science fiction – but it’s actually science fact. tabata is the hot new workout scientifically proven to get you fit in just four minutes of intense exercise.
Professional athletes like Team GB cycling and many Premiership clubs have long been fans, along with A-listers like Henry Cavill, Elle McPherson and Jessica Biel, plus X-Factor winner Sam Bailey.
Now Olympic athlete Louis Smith has started using it – with dramatic results. He has undergone a startling transformations – all thanks to tabata TM.
Louis Smith who won silver and bronze medals in the 2012 Olympics, dropped half a stone of bodyfat in just three weeks of doing these full bodyweight routines and is now looking ripped and lean, “Since starting tabataTM I feel amazing – the best I’ve felt for months. tabata™ is the first exercise system born in a laboratory, not in a gym. Developed by eminent Japanese scientist Professor Izumi Tabata, it’s the most famous form of High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) with 20 seconds of intense exercise followed by a 10” rest, repeated eight times. That’s just four minutes of exercise in total (excluding the warm-up and cool-down)!
Clinical trials showed that it was more effective in those four minutes at improving fitness levels than an hour on an exercise bike. Plus it burned calories for up to 12 hours after the workout ended!

The routines themselves feature dynamic bodyweight moves –like the cockroach, the frog jump and the spring high bunny hop – which have a heart-pumping effect at their core and aim to get participants to work to their maximum.
Each 20 minute workout includes a mobilisation, warm up, the four minute tabataTM section, plus a relaxing cool-down and stretch.

Tests using the tabata™ system increased VO2 max – the gold standard test for fitness – by 13% in 6 weeks. In contrast a trial using 30 seconds bursts of intensity, with 2-minute rest periods was not as effective even though the exercise was more intense and longer lasting. tabata™ classes will also be short and effective at 20 minutes with the most intense section being just four minutes long. Prof Tabata’s latest research shows that if this method is followed correctly, using the authentic tabata™ protocol, the body will continue to consume more calories for up to 12 hours after the exercise class. These are additional calories to those consumed by the body at rest – so over and above the so-called RMB or Resting Metabolic Rate.
