Assemblyman David Buchwald Visits John A. Coleman School and Children’s Rehabiliation Center

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. - Dec. 26, 2013 - PRLog -- On Thursday, December 12, 2013, State Assemblyman David Buchwald visited the White Plains campus of the John A. Coleman School (JAC) and the Children’s Rehabilitation Center (CRC). The assemblyman’s visit was sponsored by the Interagency Council of Developmental Disabilities Agencies, Inc.

As soon as the assemblyman arrived, parents and staff members gathered in the Coleman School’s rotunda for an informal ‘meet and greet’ reception. Parents got the chance to share their individual child’s story with the assemblyman and also explained what motivated them choose the John A. Coleman School and the Children’s Rehabilitation Center for their child.

Following this, staff members, including Maureen Tomkiel, Executive Director of the JAC, and Maria Leitenberger, Principal of the White Plains campus of the JAC, took the assemblyman on a tour of the school. The assemblyman also toured the Children’s Rehabilitation Center with staff, including the CRC’s Medical Director, Dr. Maria A. Pici.

“It was my pleasure to visit the students at the John A. Coleman School and the Children’s Rehabilitation Center,” said Buchwald. “It was wonderful to see firsthand the progress of these inspiring children and the determination of their instructors and parents,” he added.

After his tour, Buchwald took the time to read the beloved classic, The Gingerbread Man, as retold by Catherine McCafferty, to a classroom of students. Tomkiel, who was also on hand as the assemblyman read the story, said that the enthusiasm and joy in the room was palpable. “The kids kept finishing the lines of the book as the assemblyman read along and would get up to point at the illustrations,” Tomkiel said. “It was very special.”

The assemblyman also felt this special connection. “I’m pleased to represent this important institution in my district,” he said, “and I look forward to forward to working on their behalf.”

Buchwald was elected to the State Assembly, representing the 93rd District in November of 2012. The 93rd District is comprised of Bedford, Harrison, Lewisboro, Mount Kisco, New Castle, North Castle, North Salem, Pound Ridge and White Plains.
