Looking for a job? Here’s how to “put the fix” into your job search and beat the competition

When looking for work, avoiding common mistakes is not enough, you must get an edge to be successful.

NEW YORK - Dec. 23, 2013 - PRLog -- Many job seekers look for job listings that look vaguely like the job they have done in the past or would like to do in the future and email their standard resume hoping to get an interview. This is the standard Shotgun Approach where they believe their resume fits all job openings. They do this because it is easy and not because it is effective. Occasionally they will tweak their resume after reading some tips online from a “resume writing expert”. Unfortunately this is about as far as most job seekers are willing to go while looking for their dream job.

This approach all but guarantees less than spectacular results. Emailing hundreds of less than appropriate resumes will not give you the result you are looking for. Instead you should objectively evaluate your Education, Skills and Experience. This is more difficult than it sounds because the human ego will resist any realistic and therefore possibly negative appraisal. You should then check all your references to see how what you think of yourself matches up with what your ex-bosses think of you. A reference check might surprise you, revealing strengths and weaknesses you didn’t know you had. This reality check is absolutely necessary if you want to “put the fix in” and get a leg up on the competition.

Now that you have an objective picture of yourself you must realize that you will have to tailor your resume to almost every job opening you are interested in. Your objective is to give the perspective employer what he wants without putting things down on your resume that will not be backed up during the reference checking process. You must look at what the company is saying in the job listing and go on-line to learn more about them so that you can have the ideal resume for that position. Don’t lie and don’t be too obvious but do intentionally craft your resume to their needs.

After you do this don’t be surprised if the number of call-backs from potential employers goes up dramatically. A “laser beam” approach virtually guarantees hitting the target. Try it and be ready to make the most of the opportunities that come your way.
