Former Prime Minister Naoto Kan Speaks Out Against Nuclear Energy

SAN DIEGO - Dec. 22, 2013 - PRLog -- Former Prime Minister Naoto Kan continues his powerful campaign against nuclear energy, speaking most recently at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club of Japan in Tokyo this past Friday.

Following citizen-organized conferences in the U.S., Japan, and Taiwan this past year, PM Kan cites the public-won victory over San Onofre nuclear power plant sited north of San Diego, California, which occurred only three days after after his key statement at a June 4^th conference entitled “Fukushima: Ongoing Lessons for California”.

While describing the experience to his global audience, he held up a July 4th Los Angeles Times advertisement titled ‘The Noblest Motive is the Public Good”, the San Diego County seal motto, in which PM Kan, former U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Chairman Dr. Gregory Jaczko, and other nuclear industry experts were publicly thanked for openly discussing their public safety concerns.  This conference was hosted by the Samuel Lawrence Foundationwith a coalition of concerned citizens from California in order to create transparent public dialogue regarding the nuclear industry.

Kan shared his experience as Prime Minister of Japan during the March 11, 2011, Fukushima earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear catastrophe, stating that at one point worst case predictions had him contemplating the evacuation of 30 million Tokyo residents and nearby regions. “The disastrous consequences of a nuclear catastrophe such as Fukushima far outweigh the risk, no matter how small this risk.“
