The EPA Says Mazda is the Most Fuel-Efficient Car Manufacturer

The EPA just recently released their Light Duty Fuel Economy Trends report covering efficiency and emissions across all American automakers with Mazda sitting at the top of the list. According to the EPA, the average fuel economy for Mazda, taking into account all of their models, was 27.1 mpg. They also had a C02 emissions average of 328 grams per mile.

Following Mazda for 2012 was Honda in second place with an average rating of 26.6 mpg. Toyota was in this place a full point lower at 25.6 mpg. The EPA released preliminary reports for 2013 with Mazda also coming out on top with a higher score of 27.5 mpg. Honda is expected to go up to 27.0 mpg while Toyota will actually go down to 25.2 mpg.

In 2013, Mazda improved the efficiency of their vehicles with more SKYACTIV engines available, and new vehicles like the redesigned 2014 Mazda3. The standard compact Mazda3 comes with a 2.0L SKYACTIV four-cylinder engine featuring a power output of 155 hp and 150 lb-ft of torque. Not only is its 0 to 60 mph time of 8.3 seconds faster than most other vehicles in its the segment, the Mazda3 is more fuel efficient with a rating of 30 mpg city and 41 mpg highway.

Mazda also introduced the i-ELOOP system in the 2014 Mazda3, which will later extend to more models. While braking, the i-ELOOP is able to recapture the energy normally lost. The automaker says this can lead to a fuel economy improvement of 10%.
