Will Republicans face backlash as extended unemployment benefits are left out of budget deal?

Far right hypocrisy is exposed as they try to blame the President for a bad economy and argue that benefit extension is unnecessary.

NEW YORK - Dec. 19, 2013 - PRLog -- The far right in a persistent and stunning display of irrational hypocrisy has been trying to blame the President for the bad economy from the time since he took office in 2009 and has at the same time battled the Democrats whenever the subject of extending emergency unemployment benefits comes up. For the moment the Republicans seem to have the upper hand as Democrats compromised to reach a budget deal.

The attempt to blame Barack Obama for the bad economy is completely groundless. After all 2008 is not so long ago that the nation doesn’t remember which party was at the helm when the economy tanked. This was clearly evident when Americans expressed their opinion at the polls first in 2008 and then again reaffirming it by giving the President another four years in 2012. To this argument the right replies by whining about how long the Democrats will keep blaming them for what happened in 2008. The answer is complicated but usually when someone breaks something they are given “credit” for that without a time limit. This may make many Republicans profoundly unhappy but it happens to be one of those inconvenient facts of life. You break it - you own it.

The hypocrisy comes when the right blames the President and the Democrats for the bad economy (7% Unemployment Rate in November isn’t exactly great) while at the same time saying that things aren’t really so bad and that anyone who truly wants to get a job can find one. Well which one is it? Is the economy really bad or not?

The right claims to be doing this on deeply philosophical grounds, and their reasoning is that extending the benefits actually somehow hinders job creation because people receiving benefits are not motivated to find work. Common sense would dictate that in this chicken and egg dispute, economic demand comes first and job creation second.

But don’t try to tell that to people who are listening to Conservative Talk Radio all day or those in Congress who cater to them. While this illogical solution to fixing our economy is unlikely to win any of these folks a Nobel Prize anytime soon, the bigger problem for them is that they will have to suffer the consequences at the voting booth for their scrooge like behavior.

While they are away for the holiday recess they will no doubt hear from their economically hard pressed constituents. Perhaps they will return to the Capital with a renewed sense of charity and work with the Democrats to help those in urgent need.
