Qigong is an ancient Chinese health system practiced for 1000s of years for health maintenance, healing and increasing vitality. Loosely translated qi (pronounced chee) means life force or vital-energy that flows through all things in the universe. Gong, pronounced gung, means work, accomplishment, or skill that is cultivated through steady practice. When you combine the two, in essence Qigong means working with energy or cultivating energy with continued practice. Shawngela feels that her daily practice with qigong has helped to transform her physical as well as mental/emotional health.

Think of the body as energy or better yet as a highway of energy with energetic routes. The energy that flows through these energetic routes can normally pass through at a high rate, however, when there is a blockage, the energy cannot flow. This leads to an imbalance of energies in the body. The flow of Qi or energy can be interrupted by several factors, including anxiety, stress, anger, fear or grief. When this occurs, disharmony in the body occurs. The only way to bring the body back into balance is to release the blockage and allow the energetic highway to flow as it normally does.

Qigong exercises consist of a series of orchestrated practices including body posture, movement, breathing, and meditation, all of which have been designed to enhance Qi function—that is, to draw upon natural forces to optimize and balance energy within, through the attainment of deeply focused and relaxed states.

Doing qigong can help relieve stress and anxiety because it balances and releases blockages in organs that TCM traditionally associates with it.
