Calabasas, California dentist Dr. Greg Rubin hosts 1st-ever Toys for Tots collection event

Dec. 11, 2013 - PRLog -- It may just be a Barbie doll or a race car, but for one little girl or boy, it may be the only thing that will help put smiles on their faces this holiday season.

“Many children may not be fortunate enough to get a toy this holiday, but we can change that,” said Dr. Greg Rubin, founder of the Calabasas Dental Institute, located in Calabasas, Calif.

Dr. Greg Rubin is proud to be serving as a local toy collection center for the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program.

Dr. Greg Rubin is encouraging his patients and everyone else in the community to stop by and drop off a new unwrapped toy.

“It doesn’t take much. When you’re shopping, just grab an extra toy and swing by the office here and simply drop it into the Toys for Tots collection box. If we can make one child smile this holiday, that’s the biggest gift any of us can ask for.”

For those who drop off a toy at his office, Dr. Greg Rubin will offer a complimentary consultation.

The U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots program collects new unwrapped toys every year and distributes them to disadvantaged children in the local community.

With the help of local businesses and other community organizations, toy-collection campaigns take place October through December and are held in more than 700 communities in all 50 states.

“Any gift is a big help,” Dr. Greg Rubin said.

So far, the Calabasas Dental Institute has collected crayons, bracelet-making kits, toy cars, dolls, stuffed animals and more.

“The community has really come out in a big way, but we can always give more, so if you haven’t already done so, please swing by and drop off a toy. Let’s help those kids experience the joy of a happy holiday.”

Experts say that the toy provides a lot more than you might think.

Studies show that growing up in poverty can have an adverse psychological impact on a child. One of the affects is low self-esteem and a feeling of no hope for the future, which can lead to destructive behavior.

When a child is given a shiny brand new toy, it shows them that someone cares and that they are worthy of such a gift. It’s a small, yet significant gesture that can help improve a child’s self-esteem and give them a sense of hope.

Experts also say that the program has a positive influence on the development of disadvantaged children by helping steer them towards a path of becoming responsible and productive citizens.

“It’s our duty as part of the community to make sure all of our children get the best possible start in life,” Dr. Greg Rubin said.

The first Toys for Tots campaign began in 1947, when 5,000 toys were collected and distributed to children. The very first toy was a handmade doll.

One year later, the U.S. Marine Corps adopted the Toys for Tots program and expanded it into a nationwide community action project.
