"Almi, a Refugee" Now Available for Kindle, Nook, iPad and other e-Readers

Tiiu Kleyn's Memoir Records the Family’s Escape During World War II

CAPE TOWN, South Africa - Dec. 10, 2013 - PRLog -- It was not easy being a refugee during World War II. Survival required perseverance, love, faith, struggle, endurance, but most of all, courage.

Almi, a Refugee tells the incredible true story of the life of the author’s mother, showing her fortitude that will inspire and bring a sense of hope to readers everywhere. The book conveys a gripping eyewitness account of an immigrant’s harrowing existence during war time. Almi’s journey begins when the 19-year-old leaves her parents’ farm on Estonia’s largest island of Saaremaa to find work in the mainland capital of Tallinn. The next year, Almi meets Aleksander, her soon-to-be husband and father of her six children.

By war’s end, they migrate back to Saaremaa. From there, Almi and her expanding family flee Estonia to avoid the incoming communists. Her journey is filled with adventure and obstacles, but the strength of family continues on to keep the family on the move, first to Sweden, and finally to South Africa.

“Almi’s history is inspiring, fascinating and for me totally captivating. The work weaves a spell all of its own, being the story of a courageous woman, probably unaware of the depth of her fortitude and strength. I am left with a great sense of admiration for her and am in awe of her accomplishments often under the most difficult of circumstances. It is a book well worth the reading.”Julie Hattingh, director of SAARP Social Services

“A touching and admirable account of a woman with incredible endurance, personality, and determination, giving the reader an insight into the sufferings of war and survival during World War II. A very humbling, and at the same time, inspiring read.”Angelique Kirk, financial adviser

“What a brilliant book. Everyone should read this. I started and couldn’t put it down.” –       Sylvia Priilaid, hospital administrative assistant

About the Author: Tiiu Kleyn was five years old when her parents fled Estonia and ended up in Cape Town, South Africa, with all the family’s belongings packed in a small wooden box. Her mother, Almi, originally wrote this story in Estonian and the author translated it into English. “There are so many refugees in this world today, my wish is to inspire them to be brave and trust in God. My mother inspired me with her strength and perseverance through all the hardship she endured and survived. She is my hero.” The book was translated into Estonian by Ivi Leiar and will eventually be published there. The author has also read the book onto tapes for the blind at the Tape Aids for the Blind studios in Cape Town.
