The History of Auburn Highlighted in New Book

Local historical society shares the history using striking, vintage images

Dec. 9, 2013 - PRLog -- Releasing on January 6, 2014 is the newest addition to Arcadia Publishing’s popular Images of America series is Auburn by the Auburn Historical Society with a foreword by Kenneth Ethier. The book boasts more than 200 images of this Massachusetts town.

The Auburn Historical Society has penned a new book that sheds light on the town’s agriculturally and industrially rich history.  The book discusses the founding of the area, including the first settlers, the Nipmuck Indians, followed by the English, the Irish and the French Canadians, who would establish the first gristmills, sawmills and textile mills. Swedish immigrants followed and worked primarily in the wire mills.  Vintage images from the area show the development of these mills and how the arrival of the railroad in 1839 fueled the town’s growth.

Readers will see images from the local farms and businesses that emerged during the early years such as; Holstrom’s and Champagne’s Markets, Fuller’s Automotive, R.H. White Construction Company and Kingdon’s Dairy. The book also shares the tale of Auburn as the site for the world’s first liquid-fueled rocket launch by Dr. Robert Goddard. With its gentle hills, open fields and close proximity to Worcester, Auburn is a charming town. Images of America: Auburn illuminates the people and places that have made the area legendary.

Highlights of Auburn include:

•Rarely seen images, such as old photographs of the Auburn Fire Department and images of the two Auburn firefighters who died in the line of duty.
•Notable Auburn residents, including Wayne Bloomquist, Cliff Granger, Richard Hedin, Sonja Carr and many others.
•Auburn’s rich sports history, from school events to the semipro football team.
•Images of many Auburn businesses that are now only memories, such as Holstrom’s Market and Phillip’s Market.

*Author profits from the sale of the book will go to supporting the Auburn Historical Musuem.*
