ATLANTA - Dec. 6, 2013 - PRLog -- One second.  One second changed so many lives.

On November 10, 2013, an Atlanta Police Officer shot the Rodriguez family dog, Jane, in the head. Jane happily ran out to greet the two officers who came to the house an hour after an accidental autodialed 911 call and she was immediately shot in the head by one police officer as the other watched on.  Neither officer allowed anyone to help Jane.  Jane died.

GUILT          “I feel so guilty,” said 11-year-old Hattie, Kelley Rodriguez’s niece.   “It was my phone that accidentally dialed 911.  I explained that is was an accident and thought everything was ok and then I hear Jane was shot.  I never meant to dial 911.  I can’t believe Jane is dead.”

SADNESS          “I was upstairs with my baby one minute and the next watching Jane get shot on my front steps,” cried Kelley Rodriguez, Jane’s mom.  “Instinctively, I grabbed my other dog, Lucy, and ran upstairs to my crying baby, George.  I was paralyzed with terror, anger and disbelief.  I began screaming from the top porch. The police would not let anyone help Jane.  They refused to call an ambulance.  Jane was my first baby and I was watching her die and not able to do anything.”

REGRET          “I thought our family was safe in our home.  I wasn’t there to protect them.  I wasn’t there to protect Jane,” said Matthew Rodriguez, Jane’s dad.  “How can we feel safe when the people that are supposed to protect us killed Jane without cause?  How can our community feel safe?”

STOLEN OPPORTUNITIES          George, the Rodriguez’s new baby, will never be able to hug the dog that loved him.  Jane stayed by George’s side most of their 3 months together.

NOTHING          No comment or response from the Atlanta Police Officer that killed Jane.

Police Officers are killing innocent animals because they lack the proper training for animal interaction. Statistics show that law enforcement shoots a dog every 98 minutes.  This is a nationwide epidemic that demands to be addressed.
