Dec. 4, 2013 - PRLog -- Sometimes it can be difficult to define what makes a community special. When people ask me what makes Dennis stand out, there isn't a short answer.

Almost anyone can make a list of at least a hundred reasons Cape Cod is such a great place to visit. But when it comes to actually living in a place, there are different reasons that a community is special.

History

As far as American history goes, practically everywhere in Massachusetts has a particularly rich heritage. And Dennis is no different. The community's history has always been centered on seafaring. Many of the town's mansions date back to days when residents depended on the sea to make a living, from whaling to sailing. Dennis is also rich in Native American history and lore and native legends abound in the area.

Located in northern Dennis, the Cape Playhouse is one of the oldest summer theaters in the country. Bette Davis was discovered at the theater, which stages productions to this day.

In 1978, Dennis was named an All American Town. Historic districts include the Old King's Highway Regional District to the north and the South Dennis Historic District, and the beautiful homes in these areas recall another era.

Things to Do

There is never a shortage of things to do on the Cape, and with its shorelines on both Cape Cod Bay and the Nantucket Sound, beach options are abundant. Residents have the option of buying seasonal beach parking passes, which means spending significantly less than non-residents must pay to park.

The Cape Cod Rail Trail originates in Dennis and winds its way to Wellfleet, affording bike aficionados access to some of the Cape's most beautiful scenery. Other recreational trails offer hiking and biking options.

About the Community

The benefits of living in Dennis include among them great schools and a low crime rate. Restaurants range from ice cream shacks to seafood restaurants to great breakfast hangouts, and shoppers have access to a bookstore, art galleries, and craft and gift shops. And the community's proximity to other towns on the Cape affords residents access to additional nearby shopping, dining, and entertainment options as well as those within Dennis's borders.

But if you ask me what I love the most about Dennis, it's the sense of community that exists in this charming New England hamlet. Some things just can't be expressed – they must be felt and experienced. Dennis, Massachusetts is one of those quintessential American places where neighbors are good to neighbors and the community has a special bond.
