Journey Through the History of Mount Baker

New book penned by local authors shares history using vintage images

Dec. 2, 2013 - PRLog -- The newest addition to Arcadia Publishing’s popular Images of America series is Mount Baker from authors John D'Onofrio and Todd Warger. The book boasts more than 200 vintage images.

Mount Baker rises over northern Washington State like a mirage, dominating the landscape like few mountains in the United States. On a clear day, it is visible from as far away as Vancouver, British Columbia, and Tacoma, Washington. This immense volcano is a study in superlatives: it is the third-highest peak in the state, holds the world record for snowfall in a season (95 feet!) and is the second-most heavily glaciated peak in the contiguous United States. The mountain also played a dominant role in the history of the region, having served as a beacon to seafarers and a lure for men in search of gold, timber and adventure.

Images of America: Mount Baker shares the stories and legends of the mountain through a stunning collection or vintage images. The book showcases larger-than-life exploits of the rough and ready explorers and pioneers who braved terra incognita to expand the northern frontier in search of adventure and riches.

Highlights of Mount Baker include:

•The book includes hundreds of historical photos, many from legendary photographers such as Darius Kinsey, Galen Biery, Burt Huntoon and many others.
•Recounts the tragic-comic history of the Mount Baker Gold Rush.
•Shares the tales of the timber industry in the area.
•Includes the story of the Mount Baker Marathon, America’s first endurance race, where runners raced from Bellingham to the summit of Mount Baker and back again.
•Traces the history of recreation on Mount Baker, including the birth of mountaineering in the North Cascades and the development of the Mount Baker Ski Area.

Available at area bookstores, independent retailers, and online retailers, or through Arcadia Publishing at (888)-313-2665 or online.
