MarryAbroad.co.uk Finds Overseas Weddings Most Popular With Capital-Dwellers

Londoners and Edinburghians more likely to marry abroad. Greece and Italy two most popular destinations, second year running.

THURCASTON, U.K. - Nov. 27, 2013 - PRLog -- Destination wedding site MarryAbroad.co.uk this week analysed its visitor statistics over 2013, to find out which regions throughout the UK were more likely to choose a wedding overseas.

Of the site’s UK visitors, 87% of those visitors came from England, with a large 27% of English visitors coming from London. London-based engaged couples planning to marry abroad, appeared to prefer European wedding destinations too, finding the site’s Italy and Spain pages most popular.

The UK visitor stats then split widely across the country, with Manchester, Birmingham, Liverpool, Sheffield and Leeds accounting for between just 2.1 – 2.8% of the English visitors to MarryAbroad.co.uk. This suggests that couples from the capital, are more likely to marry abroad, than couples from other parts of the UK.

Scotland then accounted for 6.5% of the UK visitors, with 26% of these Scottish visitors based in its capital Edinburgh.

Just 3.1% of UK site visitors came from Wales, with 46% of these visitors based in Cardiff, and 13% in Swansea.

And only 1.8% of UK visitors to MarryAbroad came from Northern Ireland, with 84% of those visitors based in Belfast.

Site Co-Founder Steph Bishop, states: “It was interesting for us to analyse our 2013 site visitors, and find that holding a wedding abroad, is far more popular for capital-dwellers. This suggests that couples in London and Edinburgh may be less traditional than other parts of the UK, putting less importance for example, on marrying in a local town where they may have family, or in a local church or other place of worship they have grown up attending.”

MOST POPULAR DESTINATIONS
MarryAbroad.co.uk also rated their most popular wedding destinations by page visit for 2013.

Greece was number one and Italy number two in the list – both for a second year running. France moved up the Top 10 list to third most popular; whilst surprise contender Portugal entered the 2013 list at number nine this year. And Thailand – third most popular destination in 2012, didn’t feature in 2013’s most popular list.

Bishop states: “We were unsurprised to see both Greece and Italy, enter as first and second most popular destinations, for a second year. However, the real surprise for us was Portugal. The country now benefits from recently changed laws, which allow non-resident couples to legally marry there. Portugal is often now chosen as an alternative to Spain, for couples who want the ceremony and legal part of their wedding on the same day.”
