“It’s an honor to receive this award so early on. Our program is only a few years old”, said Spartans director Gerald Filardi.
The Spartans also went undefeated in the 12U division, taking the championship. Filardi is a fanatic when it comes to cultivating football excellence, no doubt a result of his own achievements as a Penn State linebacker and Pittsburgh Steeler. He started the LI Spartans program a few years ago to fill the need for a higher level youth football program in the area. Long Island is rich in opportunities for select lacrosse teams and soccer academies, but there hasn’t been anything beyond the PAL teams for football players.
He started with one team, but has recruited an exceptional staff and enough players to field 3 teams in the Long Island Youth Indoor Football League whose season begins in December. The highly competitive Spartans program offers exceptional players an elite level opportunity to play ball with the best, and participate in a program where the backbone is made up of former NFL and NCAA players. Players are scouted year round by position through an extensive network of coaches, referrals, and combines which seek out the biggest, fastest, and most talented players in the region.
“The Spartans is not for everyone. It requires considerable commitment from those looking to become complete football players and take their talents to the next level. This is not a town team. The Spartans teams represent the best players in Long Island football”, said Filardi.
The Spartans will announce their 2013 indoor rosters on December 1. You can find out more about the Spartans by visiting their website www.lispartansfootball.com and by following them on Facebook and Twitter.
