ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Nov. 21, 2013 - PRLog -- One of the casualties of the Great Recession was the institution of marriage. Faced with financial uncertainties, many couples either called off or postponed their wedding plans in order to save money that might be needed elsewhere. Now that the economy has started to rebound, many of those same couples are moving forward with their plans in even grander terms. Having managed to save money, they are now rewarding themselves with diamond engagement rings and destination weddings.

One of the areas of concern for many financial experts leading into the recession was that individual savings was at an all-time low. With the ease of obtaining credit, people grew accustomed to shopping on a payment plan, spending money they didn’t have instead of saving up to make the purchase. This lack of savings worried the experts that, without being in the habit of doing it, people wouldn’t be able to tighten their financial belts and save when they had to, thereby crippling the economy again once the recovery began. However, saving rates as a percentage of income actually managed to grow during the recession, creating an economic presence that could then be spent on such things as affordable engagement rings. This renewed purchasing in turn helped the economy continue to grow.

What made the savings easier to accomplish was that the couples who were not getting married were still choosing to live together, thereby reducing the living expenses of maintaining two households and having more disposal income available to be saved in the first place. It is these newly created nest eggs that are being spent on diamond engagement rings @

and other luxury purchases. “We’re not just seeing engagement rings and wedding jewelry,” one jeweler from The Diamond Supplier recently went on the record as saying, “but also a lot of fine jewelry in general. It seems that people are feeling that the worst of it is over and they are looking to treat themselves to some of the finer things in life again.” What could be a finer treat than getting married?
