DUXBURY, Mass. - Nov. 18, 2013 - PRLog -- The Boston Globe honors Massachusetts’ best employers in its Top Places to Work magazine, which appeared in The Boston Sunday Globe on November 17. This year, XXX received the highest marks in their respective size categories. In addition, this issue will be featured on BostonGlobe.com (http://www.bostonglobe.com/) and Boston.com (http://www.boston.com/).

For six years, this popular 48-page magazine has honored the state’s most beloved workplaces based on surveys completed by the people who know them the best -- the employees themselves.

“As our economy continues to heal, most of the benchmarks for progress are purely quantitative, such as increased pay rates and expanded benefits packages,” said Boston Globe Business Editor Mark Pothier. “While there is definite value in these indicators, many signs of recovery cannot be boiled down to pure economics. The companies on our Top Places to Work list foster productivity and innovation by investing in the happiness of their employees, which cannot solely be measured in dollars and cents.”

VERC Enterprises is the region’s leading, independent chain of convenience stores and gasoline stations, with locations throughout Eastern Massachusetts and New Hampshire.  The company began 36 years ago with a single car wash in Marshfield, in a business founded by Eugene Vercollone. Today two of Mr. Vercollone’s sons operate the company, with Leo as President and Paul as Vice President. The firm has more than 230 employees and is a leader in hiring those with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. In 2011 VERC Enterprises was recognized by the Boston Business Journal as a Best Place to Work in Massachusetts and as a Leader in Diversity and in 2011 and 2012 by the Boston Globe as a Best Place to Work in Massachusetts.

In addition to the rankings, the magazine highlights creative corporate perks including company kayak breaks, fresh salads from an office garden and free rock gym memberships, among others. The Globe also conducted an executive roundtable with four leaders in technology about their recruitment techniques and workplace culture.

The Boston Globe’s 2013 Top Places to Work survey, conducted by employee survey firm WorkplaceDynamics, measured more than 76,000 individuals’ responses to statements regarding six key factors related to employee happiness, including company direction, execution, employee connection, work load and responsibility, management, and pay and benefits. Least important were pay, benefits and work-life balance, with survey subjects placing much higher importance on employee appreciation, confidence and feeling that their work is meaningful. WorkplaceDynamics also found that of all the cities surveyed, employees in Boston were most enthusiastic about their companies, making Boston the top of the Top Places to Work.

The Top Places to Work magazine also includes online extras, such as videos, sortable rankings and photo galleries. All can be found at www.bostonglobe.com/topplacesand www.boston.com/topplaces.
