HONOLULU - Nov. 14, 2013 - PRLog -- Ballet Hawaii is proud to announce their upcoming production of Nutcracker at Honolulu’s Blaisdell Concert Hall on December 20, 21 and 22, starring New York City Ballet’s Megan Fairchild, Joaquin De Luz, Andrew Veyette, Amar Ramasar and Sterling Hyltin, and Carolina Ballet’s Lilyan Vigo Ellis and Timour Bourtasenkov. Also joining Ballet Hawaii for this beautiful production is the star of the Australian Ballet, Steven Heathcote, Hawaii’s own Amanda Schull, Broadway star and Twyla Tharpe Dance veteran John Selya, and Rick Hoffman, star of the USA Network hit series “Suits.” Ballet Hawaii is also honored to welcome the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra for the first time to the “pit” where they will delight audiences with Tchaikovsky’s magical Nutcracker score, conducted by Maestra Ann Krinitsky, along with the angelic voices of the Hawaii Youth Opera Chorus.  Performance dates are Friday, December 20 at 7:30 pm, Saturday, December 21 at 7:30 pm and Sunday, December 22 at 2 pm and are generously sponsored by Starwood Hotels and Resorts Waikiki, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser, and special Guest Artist Sponsor:  United Airlines.  Tickets are on sale now by phone at 800-745-3000, at the Blaisdell Box Office or online at ticketmaster.com.

Joining these international stars of dance on-stage and the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra are more than 185 young and aspiring dancers from across Hawaii in a magical production that always inspires and sets the perfect tone for a beautiful holiday season.

“Every performance of Nutcracker is slightly different,” said Maestra Ann Krinitsky, conductor, Hawaii Symphony Orchestra. “The magic of live dance accompanied by live music keeps everyone on their toes, literally and figuratively, and for us, feeling the audience’s reaction is key to how any given performance will go. It’s this interaction, the indefinable combination of the performers’ thorough preparation, artistry and spontaneity, and the audience's reception, that makes every performance fresh and new. I trust our amazing musicians implicitly, and the quality of their playing is always extraordinary. The dancing is spectacular. Every show is thrilling. Come to all three shows – you won’t be sorry!”

Around the world, The Nutcracker is beloved for its visual feast of the dancers’ graceful athleticism, gorgeous costumes and scenery, which are all enhanced immeasurably by the colorful orchestrations and memorable melodies in Tchaikovsky’s score. Tchaikovsky’s use of the instruments, either in solo turns or in inventive combinations, enlivens the hummable tunes with special touches, lending at times a sense of realism and at other times pure fantasy to what you see on stage.

“Think of the ominous chimes of the grandfather clock in the fight scene, the fairy-like celeste in Sugar Plum, or the sweeping harp cadenza in the Waltz of the Flowers,” continued Krinitsky. “The snow scene is one of my favorites – the orchestration is at first intricate and delicate, later grand and expansive, and the voices of the youth chorus add so much pure warmth and joy to the beauty and splendor of the flakes falling and dancing in that wintry scene.”

In addition to stars of the ballet world, Broadway and television, several local luminaries will make guest appearances in the 2013 production, including Derek Daniels as the Rat King and Mother Ginger, and Willie Dean Ige as a Party Father, KITV Anchor Moanike’ala Nabarro, as well as several generations of the Philpotts family. Longtime Ballet Hawaii supporter Carolyn Berry and husband David Wilson will also make a star appearance.
