SGS Provides Construction Services for Bridge Construction Project in Korea

On October 2, 2013, SGS was awarded a new two-year contract to provide construction services for a bridge construction project in Korea.

Nov. 14, 2013 - PRLog -- On October 2, 2013, a respected Korean engineering firm, operating in the construction and material handling equipment sector for whom SGS Korea has been working since fall of 2011, extended its relationship with SGS Korea to include a new two-year contract to conduct bridge bearing shoe testing services.

Using performance testing equipment essential for appropriate examination and inspection, three SGS experts will be providing laboratory tests.

SGS Bridge Bearing, Seismic Isolation Device and Law Material Testing
Bridge bearing and seismic isolation device specification testing have become increasingly important and have moved to the forefront of rigorous quality inspection in Korea in recent times. This focus has grown to include extreme load combinations, unique designs and seismic isolation devices with keen attention paid to the large bearing dimensions which require special testing to verify final product condition and quality to bridge constructors. These tests aim to substantiate structural bearing calculations and the theoretical behavior of bearings under actual loads.

Furthermore, SGS professionals additionally carry out sliding/friction testing of moving bearings if needed in order to determine the sliding ability of PTFE/chrome steel bearings.

SGS experts implement state-of-the-art testing methods to include:

KS F4424 pot bearing for bridge
KS F4420 steel-laminated elastomeric bearing for bridge
KS F4425 testing method for bridge expansion joint
ASTM D5977-03 standard specification for high load rotational spherical bearings for bridges and structures
ASTM D4014 plain and steel-laminated elastomeric bearing for bridge
AASHTO LRFD construction specification
AASHTO LRFD design specification
BS5400 section 9. bridge bearing
EN 1337 structural bearings
ISO 22762 elastomeric seismic-protection isolator
AASHTO guide specifications for seismic isolation design

As in Korea, the construction (http://www.sgs.com/en/Construction.aspx) (http://www.sgs.com/en/Construction.aspx) of bridges and tall buildings is substantially increasing around the world. Test specifications are strongly influenced both by experience gathered in understanding and recording the natural phenomena of earthquakes and the deep knowledge and respect for implemented and regulated design rules. Consequently, all seismic isolation devices must be tested and verified safe in order to avoid human tragedy and asset risk. Structures falling into this category include bridges and viaducts, civil and industrial buildings, industrial components and installations to encompass high-risk plants such as nuclear reactors and other nuclear facilities, liquified natural gas (LNG) tanks and cultural sites to include monumental buildings, museum showcases, single masterpieces and archaeological excavation ceilings. Strategic civil buildings such as emergency management centers and hospitals stand equal to public facilities such as schools, churches, hotels and airports as well as buildings providing private residence. In keeping with other organizations held responsible for the safety and well-being of citizens, the Korea National Emergency Management Agency has enacted strict seismic isolation rules to avoid unforeseeable disasters.

The SGS Korea laboratory houses appropriate and reliable test machinery to accurately assess the hysteresis curve and stability of seismic isolation devices. SGS laboratory testing machinery is able to analyze detailed information gathered from precisely simulated actual earthquake conditions with a vertical load capacity of 30,000 kN, horizontal load capacity of 5,000 kN and fast dynamic movement stroke,

SGS Construction Materials Testing
Effective materials testing is essential in order to verify material characteristics for application trials, detecting defects, analyzing failures, improving new materials or conducting basic research on theoretical material strength. SGS materials testing services offer comprehensive testing for metals, polymers and industrial lubricants. The comprehensive SGS portfolio of services also contains a broad range of mechanical, physical, chemical and non-destructive testing methods. A world leader among testing companies, SGS provides highly experienced specialists, state-of-the-art laboratories and a uniquely extensive global reach.

SGS is especially proud to be working in Korea to provide the expertise necessary to ensure quality infrastructure and protect citizens.
