In Massachusetts, we are surrounded by heroes. From the Pilgrims of the 17th century to the Patriots of the 18th century who fought for liberty and independence, we have inspiring examples of those who put others ahead of themselves and were willing to lay down the ultimate sacrifice for future generations. In this year’s parade, we will feature some of these and other heroes of the past as they pave the way for the heroes of today. Watch for Squanto, the Native American who helped the Pilgrims grow their corn, and a direct descendant of Massasoit,Chief of the Wompanoags who formed a peace with the English Separatists when they came. Then, watch for hero patriots like George Washington, John and Abigail Adams, Paul Revere, Samuel Adams and Salem Poor, African American hero of the battle of Bunker Hill. You won’t miss hero Abraham Lincoln who made Thanksgiving a national holiday 150 years ago. As we enter the 20th century, look for Nathaniel Morton, descendant of Pilgrim Ephraim Morton, a philanthropist who died in 1902 but whose generosity is remembered in the naming of Morton Park and the Nathaniel Morton School of today. Then look for Calvin Coolidge, Governor of Massachusetts and President of the United States, and close behind him John F. Kennedy, who also served both Massachusetts and the nation as President. This Thanksgiving, let us give thanks for those who helped preserve our freedom right here at home so that we can be Boston Strong! www.usathanksgiving.com (http://www.facebook.com/ End
