NICOSIA, Cyprus - Nov. 12, 2013 - PRLog -- KPMG proudly announced today an exhibition of 32 new paintings by Vartan Tashdjian, one of the most important contemporary artists in Cyprus, at the Cyprus Theatre Organization (THOC) in Nicosia. The exhibition, to celebrate the painter’s 40-year career, will be open to the public from the 13th of November through the 24th. A documentary about Vartan’s life and work, Shades of Tranquility , will premiere the opening night of the exhibition.

Of Armenian origin, Vartan was raised in Cyprus, and his paintings are a celebration of the island’s natural beauty. Vartan has dedicated his life and his work to Cyprus, his adopted home, and its diverse land and seascapes are his greatest inspiration, particularly the island’s mountain ranges and golden hillsides, its unrivalled light and impossibly rich colours. Vartan’s experience of the island, as rendered in his paintings, is as visceral for him as his heartbeat.

Vartan studied painting, literature, music and theatre at the Melkonian Educational Institute in Nicosia. He travelled to Lebanon to study mathematics at the American University in Beirut. He returned to Cyprus in 1966 and has lived in Nicosia ever since. Vartan has been an art teacher, a singer, a writer, an actor and a school director, but his first love is painting; he is a highly-accomplished, critically acclaimed painter and the recipient of numerous awards.

Vartan has exhibited work in Los Angeles, Toronto, Montreal, London, Athens, Sydney, Bangkok, Dubai and Beirut – no other Cypriot painter has exhibited work in so many international venues. His recent exhibition in Los Angeles, on October 23rd, featured a selection of watercolour and oil sailing and village scenes. His exhibition in Nicosia promises to mesmerise everyone who attends.

KPMG Quote

We are delighted to help bring new works of Cypriot painter Vartan Tashdjian to the people of Cyprus. These 32 paintings represent another step in the journey of one of the island’s greatest painters.

Dr. Katherine Harper , Art Historian and Critic, Loyola University, Los Angeles
Every painting is a tribute to his chosen homeland, Cyprus. There is always in his painting an overriding mood of melancholy and peaceful isolation. The work is so rich.

Christos Mavris, Art Critic
Vartan is a gifted painter who has wonderful mastery of the language of colours. This technique has reached perfection. He speaks with his colours just as a poet speaks with words and fascinates his admirers. If Vartan had not been a real painter, he would assuredly have been a great poet.
