Mind this Gap

Momentum builds in Rayeesa’s Indian Kitchen as Rayeesa takes on her daughter, Farah, to apprentice management and marketing in her gap year.

“I am incredibly excited for the opportunity that this year holds.” Says new Marketing and Events Manager Farah, “Although most people wouldn’t say it, I think it’s ideal working for my mum, we work well together and are the best of friends, most of the time. It’s been inspirational seeing her success over the past 3 years and therefore this year, I plan on accelerating that growth through marketing as well as learning as much as possible about rural enterprise before I head off to Uni.”

“Working for my Mum is like trying to keep a British Bulldog on a lead… I try to keep up with her but simply can’t! She’s everywhere, at once and does it all brilliantly and I have to follow behind on a lead! She’s got the biggest bark of passion too.”

“When Farah said she wanted to take a gap year before deciding on her university path I had no idea that she would end up spending a lot of that time working for Rayeesa’s Indian Kitchen, but, it makes perfect sense. She has the same vision for the company and has seen it through its early stages and it is like a breath of fresh air for me.”

It appears that things have been accelerating at Rayeesa’s Indian Kitchen; they have been involved in the resounding ‘Made in Herefordshire’ cookbook, featuring around 80 local producers’ recipes. Sales of her mouth watering frozen curry sauces are growing fast and there are plans for expansion nationally, and the unique cookery school set in their Herefordshire farmhouse has a constant flow of eager students ready to glean as much as they can from Rayeesa.

To top this Rayeesa is planning a very exciting trip back to India in January, where their sole purpose is to gather material for Rayeesa’s long-awaited cookbook. Simon and Rebecca Wild of Photopia Photography will accompany them, in order to gather photo and video footage for the book, which will be released later in 2014. Rayeesa is thrilled to be going back to the place where she lived till the age of 4.

“Having worked with Simon and Rebecca over the years and seeing what a tremendous job they did with the Made in Herefordshire book, I know they will be the perfect team with us in Hyderabad.”

“I am both excited and nervous to go back to Hyderabad, south of India, where I first gained my passion for cooking.” Says Rayeesa. “I am excited because I know it will bring back fond memories of living with my nana as a toddler and remembering seeing chapattis being made for the first time. I’m also nervous because it’s been so long, I’m not sure how I’ll find all the change.”

Rayeesa has been in and out of India and Britain for the early years of her life, yet Farah her daughter has never been. Farah is feeling the excitement too, as she thinks it’s going to be a great time to explore a bit more of her Indian heritage.

All that can be said is, ‘Mind this Gap’.
