Celebrate Veterans Day Across North Carolina Nov. 9-11

RALEIGH, N.C. - Nov. 4, 2013 - PRLog -- RALEIGH, N.C. -- With seven U.S. military installations of its own, North Carolina is the home of many veterans. From marching with the Army to swimming with the Marines, to flying with the Air Force and to securing the land with the Coast Guard, North Carolina has stories and experiences waiting to be told from the mountains to the coast with the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources.

Come learn about Annalise Bernadette, author of Dreams of Sand, and get a book signed during her discussion at "2nd Saturdays Writers at the Thomas Wolfe Memorial State Historical Site" (http://www.nccultureevents.com/event/34003-2nd-saturdays-writers-at-wolfe-series-annalise-bernadette)  Saturday, Nov. 9, at 12 p.m. Bernadette's book follows a young family as its head-of-household, a National Guardsman, is deployed during Operation Desert Storm.

Experience a "Military Timeline at Fort Dobbs" at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, and Sunday, Nov. 10. There you will learn how North Carolina has survived numerous invading military forces and sent tens of thousands of her sons and daughters off to war during the past three centuries. Re-enactors portraying Cherokee warriors, “Johnny Reb” and “Billy Yank,” World War II G.I.s and grunts from Vietnam, among others, will be there to share how their uniforms, equipment and experience have changed over 300 years.

Attend the "Veterans Day Parade" at 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, at the State Capitol grounds and spend time at the Veterans Monument for a Veterans Day Ceremony (http://www.nccultureevents.com/event/35324-veterans-day-c...) at 11 a.m. There will be a wreath-laying ceremony and patriotic concert honoring the state's veterans.

Give a special salute at the Tryon Palace in New Bern for "Defending New Bern: 300 Years of Stewardship," (http://www.tryonpalace.org/event_details.php?num=503) at 9 a.m. Monday, Nov. 11. Commemorate the day with the men and women who have defended eastern North Carolina for more than three centuries. Artifacts from several wars will be on display and children's activities will be available in the N.C. History Center.

Enjoy a free juried car show (http://ncartmuseum.org/calendar/event/2013/11/09/american...) honoring veterans Saturday, Nov. 9, at the N.C. Museum of Art. The show will include food trucks, a kids play zone and health screenings by UNC-Rex. While you're there, check out the Porsche by Design: Seducing Speed (http://ncartmuseum.org/exhibition/porsche-by-design-seducing-speed) exhibition. The museum will offer FREE admission to the exhibition for veterans, active duty military members and their families Nov. 9-11.
