Decatur OB/GYN Practice Adds a Certified Nurse-Midwife

ATLANTA - Nov. 5, 2013 - PRLog -- Atlanta Gynecology & Obstetrics, with patient offices in Decatur and Lilburn, Georgia, has announced the addition of Julia Smookler, C.N.M, M.S.N., as their resident Certified Nurse-Midwife for the Decatur office.

Julia, a Registered Nurse, has over a decade of experience assisting patients as a labor and delivery nurse and midwife. She has dedicated herself to assisting moms-to-be by providing them safe and natural options for their births. “I derive profound joy from guiding natural processes and supporting women in whatever type of birthing experience they desire,” says Julia. “No two moms, babies or births are the same, so it is important to me to individualize care for each mom.”

With the addition of Julia to their staff, Atlanta Gynecology & Obstetrics has also extended their patient services to include several new midwifery options. “We want our patients to know we are always looking out for their health,” says Dr. Catherine Bonk, M.D., MPH, FACOG. “By providing midwifery options, we are there to support them in making the birthing decisions that best fit their needs.”

Different from many OB/GYN offices that provide an either/or approach for traditional medicine and midwifery methods, Atlanta Gynecology & Obstetrics has been progressive in providing assistance and resources for both of these types of childbirth. For example, the group has a continuing partnership with Lumina Birth, a doula support program that offers a variety of services including postpartum counseling, therapy and doula support as well as in-home lactation support and additional prenatal and postnatal workshops and classes.

“It’s important to us that our moms have the best resources available to them,” says Dr. Gary Glasser, M.D., FACOG. “With so much misinformation floating around online, we want to make sure our moms are properly educated about – and supported in – the various child birth options and methods, including midwifery.
