Nov. 1, 2013 - PRLog -- Habitat for Humanity of Wake County will honor veterans, active duty service members and their families on Veterans Day, Monday, November 11. The 2013 Habitat Wake’s Veterans Volunteer Day event will provide an opportunity for participants to spend the day on a Habitat home build project in the Coventry Creek community in Raleigh, NC. Volunteers will enjoy breakfast, a special ceremony, morning and afternoon building, fellowship, and lunch. This event is a tribute to our Veterans and others who have made a difference in our lives through dedication and service to our country.

Habitat Wake’s focus on building safe, affordable homes, building communities, and advocating for affordable housing, provides a perfect partnership with Veterans and Veteran groups. The national statistics for homeless veterans are staggering. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) estimates that nearly 63,000 veterans are homeless on any given night in the US. In addition, about 1.4 million other veterans, are considered at risk of homelessness due to factors such as poverty, lack of community support programs, and insufficient affordable housing options. Programs such as Habitat Wake’s Veterans Volunteer Day event will bring needed awareness to the shortage of affordable housing in Wake County. More than 25,000 Wake County families are in need of a safe, affordable place to live.

“Habitat Wake not only builds homes, but we build and empower the communities in which these house are located. Dignity and honor are key drivers in our mission and partnering with veterans and active duty service members is an important part of what we do,” states Kevin Campbell, President/CEO of Habitat Wake.

Habitat Wake builds safe, affordable houses for qualified homebuyers regardless of race, religion, or background. Each Habitat home is built in partnership with homeowner families, sponsors, and volunteers. Habitat houses are are sold for no profit to the partner family through an affordable 20-year zero percent interest mortgage. Habitat Wake will build 32 homes in Wake County this year.  For each home built in Wake County, a home is built in Honduras. Another 35 local families will receive assistance through Habitat Wake's A Brush With Kindness exterior repair program.
