New Children's Book Ms. Pig E. Banks Teaches Kids How to Save Money

Banks: A Pig's Tale for Little Savers, aids adults in helping children understand money—how to earn, save and invest it. This installment of the series, written by Ajshay James, MBA, CEO of The Pearl Group, chronicles the watercolor adventures of Ms. Pig E. Banks who puts to rest the notion that money grows on trees and teaches a young saver how to take care of her piggybank by feeding it currency and spending wisely. Ajshay James, a finance expert, certified accountant, real estate broker, speaker, CEO and entrepreneur, dedicated almost a decade of her life, before reaching her thirties, to breaking cycles of debt among young girls and women young at heart through her non-profit financial education organization, the Pearls for Life Foundation. In a survey by T. Rowe Price, 24% of kids think their parents discourage them from talking about money while 14 percent of the parents polled stated they actually do discourage their kids from talking about money. Three in five kids (59%) report that they go to mom first with money questions.

“Most books begin the real conversation about saving from age 9,”says James. “I feel it's important we begin those talks with our kids from birth. It just means getting more creative and making it more fun for both parent and child.”

Ajshay encourages parents to begin the conversation with children at the most natural point of interaction—story time. But, she says, learning tips on saving doesn't have to be all fantasy. Also emphasized in the story are earning good grades, keeping a tidy room to earn an allowance, and saving for a rainy day. At the end of the story, each child is invited to read and sign The Piggy Bank Promise and create a budget or savings plan including their spending goals.
