Paralympic Medalist to Address “Life Without Limits” in Detroit

(Southfield, MI -- October 28, 2013).  Cheryl Angelelli, a member of the U.S. Paralympic Swimming Team since 2000, will give the keynote address at the United Cerebral Palsy of Metro Detroit annual awards luncheon on November 8, 2013, in Bloomfield Hills, at the Birmingham Athletic Club.

"I am very honored to have been asked to speak,” Angelelli said. “I share UCP's vision of creating a life without limits for people with disabilities, and I hope my message and story can inspire others to realize their full potential.”

Angelelli, who lives as a quadraplegic since suffering a broken neck in 1983, won two bronze medals at the 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens, and two silver medals at the Paralympic Games in Beijing in 2008. A graduate of Oakland University, Angelelli was crowned Ms. Wheelchair Michigan in 1991, and today is the director of marketing and public relations for the DMC Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan.

The UCP/Detroit annual luncheon will also feature a book signing by local author Carolyn Siewicki, whose book, The Joys of Jennifer, chronicles the life of Siewicki’s daughter, who has special needs. Other community members will share stories of how UCP/Detroit has enabled them to live “life without limits” in the areas of employment, community access and assistive technology.

Doner Partners, LLC, a leading advertising agency based in Detroit, will receive the Roger McCarville Community Partnership Award. Oak Park-based Ringside Creative/Cutters will receive the Richard L. Beer Volunteer Award, and Joshua Wright will receive the Marion “Kit” McDonell “Life Without Limits” Advocacy Award.

“The annual awards luncheon is an opportunity for UCP/Detroit to recognize the hard work of volunteers who give of their time, talent and resources to support our mission of advancing the independence all people with disabilities.  Through their dedication and support we are able to promote Living a Life without Limits,” Leslynn Angel, UCP/Detroit executive director, said.
