SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Oct. 23, 2013 - PRLog -- South Lake Tahoe, CA; October 23, 2013 – The newly released book “Beating Colon Cancer and  Surviving the Cure” by Randolph  and Patricia Henniger details their family’s journey from cancer diagnosis through treatment, recovery and surviving the cure for 27 years.

The book includes insights gained by Randolph Henniger’s 20+ years as a cancer survivor and advocate with the American Cancer Society, Colon Cancer Alliance and United Ostomy Associations of America. From diagnosis at age 30 to surgery a week later; through treatment including surgery requiring a permanent colostomy and radiation treatments, this is a family’s journey to defeating colon cancer.

Surviving the short and long term effects of treatment is presented from both a personal and survivor community level. Although Mr. Henniger did not have chemotherapy, through his years of working with and supporting thousands of cancer patients, he is able to share multiple examples of treatment side effects.

Moving from Victim to Victor is an important topic that is discussed through personal stories of dozens of cancer survivors. Knowing that I have cancer and the cancer does not have me is an important breakthrough in understanding how to live well as a survivor. The impact of a cancer diagnosis on family and friends is significant and their responses can be heartwarming and troublesome.

The Henniger boys were only 3 (Joshua) and 5 (Jeffrey) when Randolph was originally diagnosed with Stage 3 rectal cancer. The doctors told him that he had only a 30% chance of surviving past 2 years. The worry about not living to see your children grow up weighs heavily on Randolph and motivates him to accept any/all treatments that may give him a better chance of living to see his children grow into adults. What to tell the kids is also addressed through the family’s journey together to defeat this terrible disease together. They are stronger for having had the experience.

“Beating Cancer and Surviving the Cure” by Randolph and Patricia Henniger is available in both paperback and eBook for digital download. Books can be purchased on Amazon
