TORONTO - Oct. 28, 2013 - PRLog -- Toronto psychotherapist, Pearl Goodman, is the author of Peril: From Jackboots to Jack Benny, an international and highly acclaimed account of her experiences juggling the angst of her survivor parents and its impact on her and her brother with her desire to fit into contemporary North American society during the 1960s and 1970s.

She will be giving two presentations at this year’s Holocaust Education Week in Toronto. On Monday, November 4, she will be at the Barbara Frum Branch of the Toronto Public Library to talk about The Post-Holocaust Story: The Impact on the Second Generation. Andy Marcus posted on Facebook this glowing comment:

"Hey everybody - this is Pearl Goodman. I don't know her personally, but she wrote a book called "Peril: From Jackboots To Jack Benny." There has been alot (sic) written about the Holocaust - where 1/3 of the world's Jews were killed. But this book is very different. If you've ever wondered how people, brutalized and starved close to death walked out of those camps and moved on with their lives - this book explains it. That's what her parents did. What distinguishes this from others on this subject, is that the author explains how it feels. How her survivor parents felt. And how she and her brother felt. She is empathetic toward her parents when they behaved in ways that seemed odd to others, but were completely rational, given what they went through. It is written with love, empathy and respect for herself, for her family and, ultimately, the Jewish people. And, given the subject, I don't know quite how she did, it, but there are times when it's even funny. This is a must read. Go buy it on Amazon!"

Peril has been described in reviews as:

"a thought provoking memoir" (the Jewish Tribune),

As a having "an ambience that sits in the memory, long after it has been read and laid aside" (bookpleasures.com)

As "a culturally informative and emotionally moving story"..... "Far More Than 'Coming of Age': Holocaust and Love" (Amazon) And

as "a powerfully moving book that deals with the lingering intergenerational effects of the horrific history of the holocaust.." (a second review on Bookpleasures)

David Schatzky, psychotherapist and former CBC broadcaster had this to say about the book:

"She's accomplished something I wish I could have done: written a very personal memoir of her life growing up Jewish in Toronto.

Peril details the culture of the time, and is most affecting when she tells us about her complicated and perilous relationship with her Holocaust survivor mother and father and their harrowing traumatic experiences.

Whether you recognize familiar Toronto landmarks from her youth, recall television shows and music from back-in-the-day, relive the sometimes hilarious and sometimes chilling experiences of her adolescence, or suffer through the torments of her parents' concentration camp trauma and the tribulations of their decline, there's something in Peril to engage almost every reader"
