BALTIMORE - Oct. 22, 2013 - PRLog -- Parents in Baltimore and surrounding areas prefer to keep news about an outbreak of head lice within their family  and are not likely to share that information with their children's school according to a survey recently conducted by LiceDoctors Head Lice Treatement Service.  LiceDoctors conducted a series of 50 in-depth qualitative surveys among families who had at least one case of head lice in a school age child.

Among those surveyed, 32 families  or 64% did not report the incidence to the school nurse. The most common reason cited for not alerting school is not wanting their child to miss school. This was particularly evident in schools with "no nit" policies. As one Baltimore mom stated, "To be honest, it seems ridiculous to keep my kids at home when they feel fine and lice are rampant in the schools. I can't keep them in a bubble. Lice are just a fact of life today."

Twenty six families surveyed or 52%  opted no to t tell  their child's friends' families. The principle reason given by parents for not telling friends was fear of "stigma" or their child being "teased" or "socially isolated".  Parents explained that many parents dread their child getting lice and would tell their child to avoid any other child who had had it for days, even after eradication. An Ellicott City parents reported, "The first time my daughter got lice, I told her friend's parents. Then a week later half the kids did not show up to her birthday party. My daughter was devastated."

Parents universally agreed that more education was needed about head lice in the schools to help increase understanding and to promote more tolerance. A Baltimore dad reported, "The stigma is there and that is in part because of ignorance which fosters fear. The more parents understand about how kids get lice and what to do if you find lice, the less panic there will be."
