Costco to Host Book Signing for Local Columbus Author

Richard E. Barrett will be available to sign copies of pictorial history

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - Oct. 15, 2013 - PRLog -- During the first half of the 20th century, Columbus grew from a population of 125,560 (1900) to a population of 375,901 (1950)—a three-fold increase. Columbus’ status as the state capital ensured that it would forever remain a vibrant, growing city, and postcards are one vehicle for recording this growth.  This new book includes the earliest Columbus scenic postcards, many images from the golden era of postcards, and later scenes that show some of the changes that occurred in Columbus between the end of World War I and the post-World War II boom of the late 1940s.

The postcards presented are from the personal collection of the author, considered to be the most extensive collection in existence.  Images included are common views such as the State Capitol, train stations, hotels, restaurants, theaters, parks, and sports stadiums, and a large number of one-of-a-kind views, including those of Papa Presutti’s first saloon and of Tommy Sopwith (the English airplane manufacturer) at an air meet in Columbus in 1910.  Some of the more odd images are included as well:  postcards from the Ohio Penitentiary include the electric chair and the prisoners’ dining room.  Visitors and Columbus natives alike will enjoy this look back at the city’s landmarks and amusements through the years.
