Georgia has the 10th highest rate of domestic- violence murders in the country. “Unfortunately, the systems in place to respond to victims and perpetrators usually provide a single-focus response and do not address the complex nature of this problem,” “A number of issues that frequently occur with domestic violence go unresolved, leading to missed opportunities to address the life experiences of domestic-violence victims and the barriers they face.” said Veda Brown, founder and Executive Director of Sisters Empowerment Network, Inc. “ Domestic abuse is a preventable public health problem and prevention begins with each and every one of us. Our mission is educating victims and their families that domestic violence is not an option and that getting the help they need and deserve are available. Participants can register online at (www.sistersempowerment.org) or complete a form the day of the walk/run from 7-8 a.m. at the Riverdale Town Center, located at 7210 Church Street in Riverdale, GA. Pre-registration cost is $25 for individuals, $10 for students’ 1st – 12th grade and $90 for teams of 4, while cost is $30 for individuals, $15 for students, and $95 for teams of 4 the day of the event. All proceeds go toward Sisters Empowerment Network to support domestic violence prevention programs and services needed for women and children victimized by domestic violence. The 2013 walk/run starts at 8:30 a.m. at the Riverdale Town Center (also the finish site). The route takes walkers and runners on a route through the Riverdale (Church Street) Community. Prizes are awarded to first, second and third place finishers. T-shirts will be provided for participants who registered by Oct. 12 after which, T-shirts will be provided based on availability. The post-rally immediately following the 5K will provide a resource center, vendors, food, music, activities for the kids and tribute to the 62 GA fatality victims and much more will also take place.
