By: Dr. Alan M. Gibbs Today, more than 4 million children and 1 million adults in the United States and Canada are receiving treatment from orthodontists to improve long-term dental health and change facial appearances for the better. Through continued advancements in orthodontic treatment, patients reap the benefits of better dental health, higher self-confidence and healthy, beautiful smiles. Halloween tends to be one of the busiest times of the year at orthodontists' offices, primarily because patients eat treats that they should not be eating. Candies and other treats that are hard, chewy, sticky or crunchy can cause damage to orthodontic patients' braces. Broken braces can be uncomfortable for the patient and may even prolong treatment. As part of October’s National Orthodontic Health Month, Dr. Gibbs is providing braces-friendly Halloween tips to help orthodontic patients and parents enjoy the holiday. Look for softer treats, such as soft chocolate or peanut butter cups, or melt-in-your- Any foods that are sticky, chewy, hard or crunchy should be avoided by anyone wearing braces or retainers. "Eating food that could harm a patient's braces may affect treatment length and results, just as if they were not tending to oral hygiene or wearing their rubber bands," says Dr. Gibbs, orthodontist. "If orthodontic patients are careful about the Halloween treats they eat, they can keep their braces intact and should be able to finish treatment on time and with good results." To make patients feel a little better about avoiding the treats they collect door-to-door, Dr. Gibbs is holding his annual Candy Buy Back promotion. Current patients and their families are encouraged to trade in their Halloween candy for cash. The reward will be $1 per pound of candy. The office is accepting candy November 1 – 8. All candy turned in to the office will be donated to Long Island Cares. Dr. Alan M. Gibbs is a local orthodontist. He has served the Huntington area for over 30 years. Dr. Alan M. Gibbs uses the latest technological advances in the industry, such as invisible ceramic braces, Incognito Braces (behind the teeth) and Invisalign®, along with the latest in computer technology to ensure that patients receive the most effective care possible.
