By: Kary Movers Ltd This year marks the thrid consecutive year for Kary Movers to be nominated for BC Small Business Awards. Last year they made the top ten for Employer of the Year and this year they are hopeful that they will win in at least one of the four categories they have been nominated in. Kary Movers Ltd is a South Surrey based company with about 22 employees. They not only hold regular employee family fun days to encourage family first beliefs in their employees but also have special benefits which people are envious of. Some of the benefits of working with Kary Movers are that regular drivers and some other employees get use of company phones but also company cars to use for getting back and forth to work, carpooling from Skytrain for non driving staff, use of the vehicles outside of work, no interest small loans for staff should they run into emergency situations and could not have planned for such. The crews get together regularly outside of work hours to watch sporting events together, camping, boating, quad riding and much more. It builds a great family environment for all employees which also carries over to the service our customers receive. without our customers we would not have employment and we appreciate every customer we serve. All employees share the pride of Kary Movers Ltd and wear the Kary colours with great respect for where the owners have grown the business from. The current owners bought Kary Movers nine years ago. At that time it was a small business card size ad in the phone book and a rental truck. Now the company has grown to have 8 moving trucks and one flat deck tow truck. They have purchase 3 other local moving companies including BC's Careful Movers, Starving Students Movers (Canada) and Coops Moving. They also have vans and small vehicles for internal moves, local small deliveries and other times when the full size truck is not required. The teams at Kary Movers Ltd are proud to help customers move their home locally and throughout Western Canada. They also relocate offices, commercial, industrial and manufacturing equipment and facilities. This past summer they have added a tow truck division which offers towing on their flatdeck which has the capability to tow 2 vehicles at a time. With that they also pay cash for scrap vehicles for recycling. they have even used the tow truck to relocate vehicles from Surrey, BC to Calgary, AB. Kary offers clients the use of plastic totes for packing and moving services which encourages the reduction of cardboard boxes being used. When cardboard cartons are used Kary Movers encourages them to be reused and recycled, not just discarded into a landfill. The drivers are encouraged to follow the companies zero idling policy which reduces the emmissions of carbons into the environment. All Kary facilities have blue bins for recycling of all items which are able to be recycled. Low energy lighting is used in all offices, office equipment is set to maximize the energy saving options available. The teams also volunteer each year as a part of the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup. They not only volunteer in the event but organize an anual event in White Rock which cleans garbage and waste from our shoreline but also promotes the event and invites their customers and the general public out to participate. Kary Movers has built their business through treating all staff and customers with respect and as a part of a family. When the moving teams are on relocation jobs and the customer wants to dispose of items which the team feels can be of use to others and reused they bring it back to the Kary Warehouse until they find someone in need that could make good use of items. At that time they deliver items to peopple in need. This is furthering their goal to be leaders in reduce - reuse - recycle concepts in business and for the community. When the Maple Ridge fire department called Kary Movers jat the end of a long workday, just a few days before Christmas in 2012, the teams were informed of a large apartment building which had burned out all of the residents. Due to their being no electricity and the safety concerns of having people enter the building in order to remove any salvageable items, residents could not get even the most essential of items. The teams at Kary Movers jumped into action and even after a long day they grabbed flashlights, safety gear and went out to the building and worked through the night by flashlight to pack and remove any salvageable items. The owners of Kary Movers also donated the free storage for residents to keep recovered items until they were able to secure new residences. When the Surrey Food bank was also concerned that weather conditions were going to prevent volunteers from being able to collect much needed donations of non parishable food items in time for the Christmas rush, Kary Movers donated the use of trucks and fuel to get the job done in time for the Christmas season. The teams worked all week for free to ensure ALL donation locations had been attended to and food made it to the Surrey Food Bank for distribution to our neighbours in need. Other things they have done include free emergency moves for persons in abusive relationship trying to flee for safety, asssiting an elder gentleman in Harrison Hot Springs who had actually had the guys load up his apartment and move him to that town. Upon arrival it turned out the gentleman was confused and did not recall where his new home was. It turned out that although until that point, he had presented as any other customer would have, he did suffer from some health issues and Kary Movers was able to bring in professional health care and social service staff to help him and track down his family. This event had a happy ending and that gentleman is now in a new home and has all of the support he should have had before the move. The teams at Kary Movers demonstrate great care and compassion for customers and the community. They take the lead from the owners and management in order to ensure that the company always maintains a sense of social responsibility and environmental leadership for others to get involved and make a poisitive change for our future. We encourage people to take a moment and log onto the BC Small Business Awards website and place a vote for a company that truely deserves the nomination but also the awards this year. http://sbbcawards.ca/ End
