SUMMIT, N.J. - Oct. 7, 2013 - PRLog -- As interscholastic and youth sports programs struggle with escalating concerns about safety and sportsmanship, headlines about trash talking, violence during games and the alarming consequences of failing to address the risks of  concussion seem to be an everyday occurrence.  Uncivilized and dangerous acts by young athletes, coaches and spectators alike are dealt with every day by game officials – referees and umpires – often at great personal risk to themselves.

So much so that, when this year’s Annual Fall Seminar for some 250 rules interpreters and referees of the 16,000-member International Association of Approved Basketball Officials, Inc. rolled around, Association attorney and former official Alan Goldberger used his yearly forum to speak to the officiating leaders on the subject of “Game Control, Spectators and Videotape” – Law & Order on the Basketball Court.”

The program, which will be repeated later this month at local organizations in New Jersey and elsewhere, helps officials deal with new regulations regarding violence and bias incidents, state laws regarding concussion management; and recent rules changes targeting such unpleasantries as trash talking, and racial and ethnic taunting in sports.

“Law & Order” will also come to the Lacrosse field, where Goldberger will address referees at the U.S.  Lacrosse National Convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in January; and again to the Baseball and Softball diamonds in the spring when the New Jersey State Baseball and Softball Umpires ‘Association convenes its pre-season meetings.

A past-president of the 800+ member North Jersey Board of Approved Basketball Officials, Goldberger is the author of the book, "Sports Officiating: A Legal Guide. He officiated football, basketball and baseball for more than 30 years; and is currently a partner in the Summit, New Jersey law firm of Brown Moskowitz & Kallen, P.C.
