FORT MYERS, Fla. - Oct. 4, 2013 - PRLog -- Dr. Joseph P. Walker, founder of Retina Consultants of Southwest Florida, received an Honor Award for service to the American Society of Retina Specialists at the organization's annual meeting in Toronto recently.

         Dr. Walker was honored for his time and contributions to the scientific programs of the association.  More than 1,000 retina specialists from all over the world attended the conference.

         Dr. Walker has been a member of the ASRS for more than 20 years and was honored for his role in making presentations, serving as a symposium moderator and panel discussion leader as well as serving on the instructional course faculty.

         Dr. Walker is a Board-Certified Ophthalmologist specializing in retinal and vitreous disorders, such as macular degeneration and diabetic eye diseases.  He earned his M.D. degree in 1974 from New York Medical College and completed Fellowship training in vitreo-retinal diseases and surgery at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary of Harvard Medical School.

         He founded Retina Consultants of Southwest Florida in 1980 and is an Adjunct Assistant Clinical Scientist at The Schepens Eye Research Institute of Harvard Medical School.  He also is a Senior Clinical Research Scientist at the National Ophthalmic Research Institute (NORI), in addition to his medical practice.

         Dr. Walker is a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons, a member of the American Society of Retina Specialists, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Medical Association and multiple other professional organizations.
