STOCKPORT, U.K. - Oct. 3, 2013 - PRLog -- Prime Minister David Cameron’s announcement of his intention to push through extended GP opening hours to meet growing public demand marked a clear victory for Action for Sick Children’s First Contact Care Survey, said the charity’s chairman Pamela Barnes yesterday.

“When the results of our ground-breaking survey of parents and carers were revealed this summer, improved access to GP’s surgeries was at the top of our list of recommendations,” added Mrs Barnes, speaking minutes after Mr Cameron was due to outline his views at the Conservative Party Conference in Manchester.

“The Prime Minister’s recognition of the importance of access to GP’s surgeries vindicates the stance taken by Action for Sick Children. After more than 50 years campaigning for the rights of sick children, we know only too well the real concerns of parents and carers.

“The results of our survey, which was very professionally conducted,  clearly underlined access to GPs as the main concern of parents and carers and I am delighted that Mr Cameron has recognised the importance of a factor which we were first to highlight,” said Mrs Barnes.

“Extending GP opening hours will be welcomed with open-arms by parents across the country. It should also reduce the pressure on accident and emergency departments because there is a growing school of thought that the A&E department is regarded the natural alternative to the GP’s Surgery.”

The Department of Health is encouraging GPs to apply to a £50 million fund to help them find ways of staying open longer. Nine groups of practices have already signed up to try out longer opening hours.

Mrs Barnes said: “The overwhelming fact that came up time and again from our survey of 2,000 parents and carers was that GPs/family doctors are the most frequently used, most understood and most trusted source of advice, help or treatment for sick children.

“Therefore it makes absolute sense to improve access to those highly regarded GPs,” added Mrs Barnes.
