Ollie’s Ostomy - An Inspiration To Young Ostomates

Oct. 2, 2013 - PRLog -- London, ENGLAND – August, 2013.  Being a teenager isn’t easy at the best of times, but needing a stoma on top of all the changes your body is already going through can make it all even harder. Take some comfort in the fact you are not alone...

CliniMed and SecuriCare know the importance support groups can play in living with a stoma, and talking to people in the same position as you can be very reassuring. Cue Ollie! Ollie (left) is a stoma patient who has begun writing a blog for the SecuriCare website entitled “Ollie’s Ostomy”. Its purpose; to inspire other teens and young people living with a stoma with his experiences, proving that you can live life to the full with a stoma. What Ollie wants all stoma patients to gain from his blog is the knowledge that “your hopes and dreams don’t have to be put to one side.”

At age seventeen Ollie had a stoma thrust upon him with very little notice. Now at twenty seven he has had a total of sixty procedures and though he admits at times it can be a chore, he has not let having a stoma stand in his way.  In fact, at eighteen he became a lifeguard and lifeguard trainer, at nineteen a police officer, at twenty four a law student and at twenty five a blogger with over one hundred thousand readers a month. If that is not inspiration, what is?

Ollie’s advice is pretty clear as he explains the reasoning behind his diverse studies and employment. When too ill to work, Ollie attended university, and when too ill to study he began his blog. At each hurdle Ollie found an activity to get excited about; he never let his stoma restrict his ambition.

Ollie is just one example of someone who hasn’t let having stoma surgery stand in their way. Other people who have succeeded despite stoma surgery include voice coach Carrie Grant (above - right). Carrie is a long time Crohn’s Disease sufferer, and has also had a number of stoma surgeries. Despite this she has created a career to be proud of.

With support of family and friends and inspiring people such as Ollie and Carrie, living with a stoma doesn’t have to hold you back.
