(Miami Beach, Fl) Ladies, gentlemen and children of all ages, let the games begin!

It’s all fun and games at the 2014 Art Deco Weekend, January 17–19. Designated “Art Deco at Play,” this year’s message is clear: Bring the kids—and be a kid!

Everyone knows you start at “Go,” and that would be the Art Deco Welcome Center, 1001 Ocean Drive. The exhibition hall there will display antique toys, with a special emphasis on those from the Art Deco ‘20s and ‘30s. There will be vintage board games, dolls, toy cars and planes. A sandbox will display beach toys of yore. And the walls will be covered with oversize toy ads, game boards and paper dolls.

Paper dolls! What’s a paper doll? 21st-century kids can learn all about them at the interactive paper doll creation station. At the building station, today’s Lego enthusiasts will get a feel for the earliest Legos. Inspired by 1930s toys, local middle school students have put the art in Art Deco with drawings and paintings they will exhibit.

Because they don’t make ‘em like they used to, toy experts from the Miami Antique Toy Show will be on hand to talk about the toys on display and answer your questions. Bring an old toy for a chance to have it appraised!

Finally, to be sure you feel like a kid at Christmas, www.Modernism.com is furnishing a living room circa December 1935, complete with an antique toy train circling a Christmas tree decked with vintage Art Deco ornaments. Check out the toys under the tree!

Once you’re in touch with your inner child, head to the adjacent Welcome Center lecture hall and reminisce at a kid-at-heart film series. Catch stars of the day like Shirley Temple and films like the “Little Rascals,” “The Wizard of Oz” and “Annie.” Don’t forget the Cracker Jack. Everything old is new again.

Of course you’ll want to move past “Go” to see all the antiques and antics that fill three days and three nights on Ocean Drive during the 37th Annual Art Deco Weekend. Pick up a program guide and don’t miss a thing.

It’s not too late to get in on the fun. If you have vintage toys to show or another playful idea for “Art Deco at Play,” or you’d like to partner with the  Miami Antique Toy Show,  The Original Miami Beach Antique Show, www.Modernism.com and the Miami Design Preservation League for one of the biggest events of the year, contact Amanda at Amanda@mdpl.org or (305)672-2014.
