Elite Dental of Staten Island Offers Helpful Tips\Reminders to maintain good ORAL HEALTH

October, 2013……The month of October brings with it national attention to the importance of dental hygiene through the American Dental Hygienists’ Association recognition of this month as National Dental Hygiene Month.

Elite Dental offers some simple tips for maintaining good oral health.

Brush – you should brush two minutes, two times per day. There are products for patients to consider when looking to maximize the effectiveness of their brushing habits. For example, the Sonicare powered toothbrush makes brushing simple because the brush does the brushing technique for you.

Floss– every day. When you floss you remove substances from your teeth that the toothbrush can’t reach like food particles between your teeth and under the gum line. Flossing also removes plaque. When plaque is not removed it could lead to tooth decay and gum disease.

When you floss begin with 24 inches of floss, wrap floss around middle fingers, curl around tooth, slide under gums and back to chewing edge 8 to 10 times on each surface. Move floss about gum and switch to adjacent tooth. Repeat until all tooth surfaces are cleaned.

Rinse – your mouth should be rinsed with products containing the ingredient – Xyolitol.  This natural ingredient (our bodies produce from 5 to 10 grams every day from other food sources) helps moderate pH (acid\base) like your swimming pool does and reduces the incidence of tooth decay and gum disease. It can be conveniently delivered to your teeth via mouthwash, chewing gum, tablets, toothpaste, or even candy.
