CALGARY, Alberta - Sept. 28, 2013 - PRLog -- Did you ever notice that the jobs recommended for you on websites like LinkedIn don’t seem to line up with your particular skill set or credentials? A friend of mine – a Canadian law student – recently told me that she routinely gets “targeted” recruitment posts from American law firms, often for senior positions. “My LinkedIn profile is complete and accurate,” she said. “I don’t understand why the recruitment posts are not filtered by location, and why senior positions requiring ten years’ experience are being sent to someone who is currently completing a degree.”

Targeted recruitment can be even more frustrating for Engineering professionals, since there is such a huge variety of speciality areas within our field. You are rarely going to come across a job posting that says “General Engineer Wanted!” Employers will generally specify the type of engineering professional that they need and the years of experience a position requires. Unintuitive matching algorithms (that may work very well for less precise job descriptions) will often result in a software engineer getting job ads for electrical engineering positions.
