Attorney Ian N. Friedman Appears in American Board of Criminal Lawyers (ABCL) Documentary

ABCL is a highly selective honor society for accomplished criminal defense lawyers throughout the nation. Cleveland Criminal Defense Attorney Ian N. Friedman was one of the few ABCL fellows who appeared in the documentary. According to the documentary, ABCL is an exclusive organization that accepts only criminal defense attorneys who have extensive experience handling some of the most difficult types of cases. As outlined by the organization, lawyers only become eligible once they have 10 years or more of criminal trial experience, and once they have tried 50 or more major felony cases to verdict.

In the ABCL video, Attorney Friedman described his experience of being asked to join the invitation-only organization. He noted that as he started to learn more about ABCL and its members, he began to realize that some of the group’s other members included some of the top attorneys in his area. In the documentary, Attorney Friedman said: “These were folks I had heard about since day one and watched their trials and tried to do what they did. … Being a part of the group, being surrounded by such professionals and folks at the top of their game—it’s such an incredible feeling.”

The ABCL documentary provides a glimpse into what it means to be a member of the organization. ABCL was founded in San Francisco in 1978 by Nate Cohn, a lawyer who tried more than 200 criminal and civil cases and who represented many public figures, according to the organization’s website.

Since Attorney Friedman received his law degree from the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law, he has achieved various professional accomplishments. He has served as President of the Ohio Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers, an organization that honored him with its first “Lawyer of the Year” award in 2011. He also received various other honors, such as inclusion in the Ohio Super Lawyers® list and in The National Trial Lawyers: Top 100 Trial Lawyers over multiple years. The attorney is currently a member of the Executive Committee for the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association’ Board of Trustees, and he is a criminal law adjunct professor at the Cleveland-Marshall College of Law.
