High School Senior Kevin Roundtree Named County Athlete of the Year At The Special Olympics Florida

MIAMI - Sept. 26, 2013 - PRLog -- The community of South Florida came out in full support at this year’s Special Olympics Florida – Miami-Dade County (SOMDC) 2013 Annual Sponsor An Athlete Awards Dinner.  Each year (SOMDC) celebrates Eunice Kennedy Shriver Day by honoring their most outstanding Athletes, Coaches, Volunteers and Supporters at their annual awards dinner. The setting for the inspirational event was the prestigious La Gorce Country Club. Guests included DJ Irie, Baseball Player Chris Duffy, and former American soccer player, Joe-Max Moore, to name a few. County Athlete of the Year awardee, Kevin Roundtree who is a senior at South Ridge High in Homestead was also presented a full scholarship to the Our Pride Academy (www.ourprideacademy.org)  by Cristina Cartaya. The evening also included documentaries by award-winning filmmaker Carl Kesser that highlighted each of the awardees and left not one dry eye in the house.(https://vimeo.com/75458011). Title sponsor 123 Lumpsum’s Andrew Savysky was acknowledged for his professional and personal commitment with his training with SOMDC’s Track Athlete Nasif. The donation by Presenting sponsor, Wells Fargo Advisors, LLC sponsored over 30 athletes for an entire year of sports training and competition.



The celebrated night was hosted by Miami Herald columnist and Pulitzer Prize winner Dave Barry. Music was powered by The Spam All Stars who kept guests on their feet throughout the night. The decor was curated by The Design Group. The Special Olympics Athlete Leaders educated guests about the hurtfulness of the r-word and asking them to pledge not to use it any longer.  ("Spread the Word to End the Word - www.r-word.org).

Another emotional highlight of the night was when Andy Miyares, Global Messenger, presented the award to his mother, Ana Maria Miyares.  She received the Family of the Year Award named in her honor. Dwight Whipple received the Coach of the Year Award, named after his mentor, former Special Olympics Coach Carole MacArthur, who passed away several years ago.  He is dedicated to carrying on her legacy.
