Gone are the days when advertising was found in a newspaper or in a shop window, a new craze is sweeping the nation. The IXl Company investigate how to use social media as an extra for your business. With officially over 1 billion users, Facebook is being used by businesses all over the world to promote, communicate and advertise their businesses. IXL discusses the positives of advertising their small busines on social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter.

“Facebook has hit the point of over 1 billion users, so if I promote my business through Facebook, I can speak to the public directly regarding IXL and it's clients, knowing that a huge amount of people can have access to us and our services without paying hefty prices” Says Sam, manager at IXL, Crossharbour.  Advertising through Television can cost thousands of pounds, without the guarantee of new customers as you cannot put an estimate on people actually watching the adverts, especially now as consumers can easily fast forward adverts. Facebook however has many different options such as cost per click, so you only pay for the views you receive, creating a recession proof cost effective way to advertise to over one billion people.

"Pretty much everyone from the ages of thirteen to one hundred and thirteen uses Facebook, what better way for us to directly communicate our news, events and business than through Facebook!” Says Emma, Receptionist at IXL's Crossharbour branch. According to facts and figures, the average user of Facebook is 22 years old (figures from 2012). At the age of 22, many students are finishing university, looking to get into work, and/or begin their career. With many companies, including IXL looking for graduates with talent and drive to work in their growing companies, having hundreds of people a day viewing them via Facebook is a great benefit, plus the majority of them all in their ‘career focused’ years,.. What could be better for communication and advertising of a company?

But is this just another phase that could wear off in a few months? Many see Facebook in a negative way; young adults are spending more and more time on their Facebook pages, checking their news feeds on their laptops, their computers, and most recently on their mobiles. Facebook may have evolved so quickly that it has over one billion users, but is this a dangerous obsession sweeping the nation?

Who knows? But all that can be for certain is that at this moment in time, it is popular. Its popularity is continuously increasing, and right now businesses all over the world are benefiting from Social Media sites like Facebook and Twitter. “If it is an obsession and the ‘phase’ wears off, it will only be because something more advanced has come up, and when this happens, individuals as well as businesses will all start using this as well!” Says Sam, Manager of IXL Crossharbour.

Either way, your customers and the public will always be able to keep up to date with you via social networks if companies keep using them.
