MOUNT CLEMENS, Mich. - Sept. 24, 2013 - PRLog -- Once former Chaplain, Velma Williams, announced her intention to retire, several current volunteers at the Macomb County Jail interviewed for the position; however, one candidate had a particular qualification the other applicants did not.  Steve Malek was the only interviewee who had been a convicted felon.

“Who better to minister than one who has been there and experienced a changed life?” stated Sue Latour (Vice President Board of Directors) after they learned Steve was a product of jail ministry himself.   He well understands the challenges, hopelessness and despair that one can be experience while incarcerated.  Steve had been volunteering his time for over 10 years at the Macomb County Jail, has led numerous Bible Studies and spent much time in one-on-one visits gaining an “outstanding service” award by the former Chaplain Velma Williams.

Overseeing 83 volunteers serving approximately 1300 inmates, MCJM serves to meet the spiritual needs of the inmates and officers at the Macomb County Jail.

Feeling both humbled and validated by the offer, Steve accepted the position seeing it as a logical inflow to the aftercare ministry he and his wife started in 2006, GTG.

ABOUT Gateway to Glory Ministries

Founded in 2006 by both Steve and Robin Malek, using their own funds, they purchased and renovated a condemned home to begin Gateway to Glory Ministries.  Gateway to Glory Ministries is a 501(c)3 non-profit Christ centered ministry that provides a transition home for men who are homeless and in recovery.  The ministry connects the residents to local church communities that offer Biblical studies, substance abuse treatment, counseling and prayer.  The ministry also provides them with mentors, which is crucial for their maturing.  The ultimate goal is to see the men restored to their communities and reconciled to their families.  Steve and Robin see that women in transition also need help and plan to open a women’s home as the ministry grows.

Steve and Robin Malek desire to give back to society by allowing their changed lives to change lives.  Steve continues to give of his time and energy to ministering at the Macomb County Jail as Robin, his wife, offers her administrative support to the ministry and encouragement to the women incarcerated.
