Former St Joseph’s School on the market

Sept. 19, 2013 - PRLog -- Property consultant Ryden is selling the former St Joseph’s School by Tranent in East Lothian on behalf of the Archdiocese of St Andrews and Edinburgh.

The site, located one mile north of Tranent and 12 miles east of Edinburgh, extends to 6.53 hectares (16.15 acres) and is being marketed as a leisure/tourism/employment/development opportunity.

The northern most section of the site comprises largely undeveloped and open ground, whilst the southern section has been developed over a number of years to provide eight buildings totalling 7,135 sq m (76,235 sq ft).

The main building, previously the Steil Hospital, is a category B listed property arranged over ground, first and part second floor and provides a range of adjoining and interconnected rooms that have been used for a variety of uses such as dormitories, classrooms, school chapel and kitchen/dining facilities.  The property dates back to 1890 and was extended in 1896, 1915 and in the 1970s. Any new development should look to safeguard the listed building.

Further accommodation, primarily residential, was constructed on the site in the 1960s and 1970s, in addition to other smaller scale outbuildings which appear to have been generally used as storage space.
