MESA, Ariz. - Sept. 18, 2013 - PRLog -- When it comes to seats and seat covers, leather is a great material.  It has a nice luxury look about it, and a strong comfortability factor.  However, if the leather is neglected, left in the sun, and never cleaned or treated; it is highly susceptible to cracking, fading, and harding.  Cleaning leather requires more than a wet washcloth and a wipe down, it requires treatment with conditioner and protection from the sun.  Here is a list of steps for properly cleaning leather:

Clean your seats. Before the reconditioning process can begin, you must clean off all of the present dirt and oils that have accumulated.
Wipe off the cleaner. Use a damp cloth to remove the residue left by the last conditioner/cleaning agent you used. Then, dry the seats off with a second cloth. Double check and make sure the seats are completely dry before step 3.
Choose your conditioner. There are a wide variety of conditioners available, and in regards to figuring out which is best; it’s good practice to go by the old adage “you get what you pay for”.
Condition your seats. The process is comparative to putting on sunscreen. Apply generously using a regular kitchen sponge, and remember to rub it all the way in. Attempt to apply it as evenly as you can, and do not leave excess conditioner exposed on the surface of the leather.
Park your car in the shade or in your garage overnight. It is imperative that the leather is out of the sun for at least 12 hours.  Then, the next day, use a dry cloth and gently give the seats one more rub down.

How often you complete this process is entirely dependent on the amount your car is used, and how often it is left exposed in the sun.  The average time suggested in between treatments is 3 months or so.
